About Us



The Chinese Martial Arts Institute (CMAI) was founded by Master Burris in 1987. CMAI opened it's first location in Falls Church, Virginia in 1989. Since 1995 CMAI has been located in Fairfax, Virginia.

Our experienced personal are available to provide access to a wide variety of skills that can be tailored to meet your specific needs, age and body type. There are many programs to choose from.




We offer:

External System

  • Chin Na Self Defense: the basis of Japanese Aikido & Ju Jitsu, uses pressure points & joint locks.
  • Shaolin Boxing: light, medium & full contact
  • Kung Fu: Traditional forms, weapons & applications
  • Contemporary Wu Shu: modern competitive & demonstrative styles of performing martial arts
  • Self Defense: Rape Prevention & Street Smart Survival Skills
  • Kickboxing: American & aerobic styles
  • Internal System

  • Tai chi: for better health & stress reduction, Yang Style, Chen Style, Combined style, International Combined Style & Tai Chi     sword
  • Xing Yi, Ba Gua & Liu He Ba Fa
  • Qi Gong Meditation && Exercise
  • Reiki
  • Aside from the physical benefits that study in our program provides, students are given an opportunity to develop their character and spirit. They are provided a forum wherein they can systematically establish goals and accomplish specific objectives. We emphasize strong mental discipline that focuses on the sanctity and preservation of the body, while developing sensitivity, common courtesy, and optimum respect for others.

    Our programs are designed to keep you in the best mental & physical condition that your schedule will permit. In addition, we furnish scholarships for academic achievement or outstanding community service when a need is demonstrated. Our staff consists of both Chinese and American National and International Champions, including Inside Kung Fu's Black belt Hall of Fame recipient, Michele Boutin.

    Introductory Lessons

    Kung Fu Intros are held during the Beginner or Open Class times. Cost: $20.00 for two lessons

    Tai Chi Intros are held during the Tai Chi or Open Class times. Cost: $20.00 for two lessons

    Attire: Loose fitting clothes, tee shirt, shorts, baggie pants etc.

    Note: Bring an extra pair of clean sneakers or comfortable walking shoes because outside street shoes or boots are not permitted past our lobby area.

    Arrival: Please try to arrive 10 Minutes before the start of class. Stretch. Relax.
